University City

University City (UC) is central to all of San Diego. Situated in the Golden Triangle and bordered by three major freeways (5, 805 and 52), University City is less than five miles from the ocean and fifteen minutes from downtown San Diego. Approximately 35,000 people call University City home-many of them young professionals with families, many students and retirees.

Many of the single-family, detached homes were built in the 1960s and 1970 and have been or are in the process of being remodeled. Newer homes built in the 1980s and 1990s come in all types and sizes-single-family homes in gated communities, attached condos, and free-standing Planned Urban Developments (PUDs). The community also has high-rise retirement homes and assisted living facilities close by the best medical care and hospitals in the region, including Scripps Memorial, Scripps Clinic, and the UCSD Medical Center.

Although originally established as a residential community, University City has become a remarkable, comprehensive community with hotels, office buildings, and the expanding Westfield University Town Center shopping center. The center currently has anchors such as Nordstroms, Macy’s, and Crate & Barrel and approximately 200 other shops and restaurants. Fine and casual dining can be found in abundance throughout University City.

Dynamic University City is close to UCSD, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, myriad biotech firms that spread from north La Jolla through UC to nearby Sorrento Valley. UCSD offers a variety of cultural and arts programming a scant ten minutes away. Schools in University City consistently rank in the top twenty percentile. And finally, UC boasts Rose Canyon and four community parks with recreation centers and great walking and biking trails. Check out the ever popular Standley Park Recreation Center located in the heart of University City. Finally, if you want to take advantage of public transportation, UC might be the place for you.
