La Jolla North

The area referred to as La Jolla North includes the University of California at San Diego and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. It’s bordered by Highway 5, La Jolla Village Drive, and North Torrey Pines Road. Many students and faculty live in the adjoining La Jolla Village area, La Jolla Heights, or La Jolla Shores. UCSD is a precious educational and cultural resource to the community, drawing from La Jolla and surrounding areas such as Del Mar, University City, and points north, east and south. On the cliffs overlooking the ocean, Salk Institute occupies a complex of buildings designed by Irving Kahn regarded as one of the country’s most distinguished pieces of architecture. On the mesa north of Salk and UCSD is the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and the facilities of many biotech firms. The Birch Aquarium, open to the public, is on the UCSD campus above the pier of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Information about the University may be found at www.ucsd.edu.
